Biographical Info
David was a track and field participant in his high school days at Trinity High School. He competed in all three throwing events, but excelled in the discus event under Coach George Yeager. Recently, he has been watching and training his daughter, Alexandra, a Mechanicsburg Class of 2023 graduate in the field events. Alexandra made district and state appearances in the discus and javelin in addition to being a State Champion field hockey player.

Chris is a recent transfer to the chapter. He started officiating in 2019, and has officiated college and high school meets in District 4 as well. Chris has been involved with track and field and cross country most of his life. His parents are coaches at Danville High School. He ran in high school at Danville and competed in college at Millersville and Lock Haven. Post college, Chris still continues to run daily and enjoys to compete in local races from 5k’s to half marathons.

Gary was Athletic Director at Trinity High School from 2011 through 2021. He began coaching Track and Field at Trinity in 2004 and continued there for 13 years. During his coaching career he coached three state hurdle champions, two 400m relay state champions and two boys state team champions and multiple girls and boys, individual, relay and team district champions. He is experienced in running the FinishLynx timing system and the FieldLynx laser measuring system.

Heather is a teacher in the Cumberland Valley district who has experience coached throwers at the high school level before becoming involved in officiating. A district and state place winner in the discus in high school, Heather continued throwing both shot and discus in college. Her main emphasis and interest remains in officiating throws and other field events.

After serving as a T&F coach for 10 years at Big Spring High School from1972 to 1982, Jim has been a PIAA registered T&F Official since 1983, including serving working at both the PIAA District III and State Championship Meets for the past 31 years. A former Big Spring AD, Jim also served as the PIAA District III Track & Field and Cross Country Chairman from 1992 to 2005 and spent many years functioning as the chapter’s Rules Interpreter. Jim has officiated all events over the years, but his main interests are starting and working meets as an FAT Operator (Fully Automatic Timing-FinishLynx) which he also has been doing since 1983. In July of 2014, Jim was appointed by PIAA as the State Interpreter for Track & Field and Cross Country.

Terry was a versatile performer in track and field during high school at Upper Dauphin. His events included both high and intermediate hurdles, the long jump, and the discus. Since college graduation he has taught at Susquenita Middle School. Over the past 20 years, he has worked in multiple positions at Susquenita’s track meets. He began with throwing events before moving to the long and triple jumps and has become a high jump specialist for the in recent years.

Bill has been involved in track and cross country officiating since the early 1970s and served as the head coach at Shikellamy HS in Sunbury through 1975. While in District IV, he served as a starter for cross-country and track meets, including the District IV cross country championships for much of the 70s. He later served as Meet Referee for the District IV Track Championships until moving to this area in 1993. Bill still starts HS meets and has officiated every field event at various invitational meets on the high school and college level, including working at the PA state meet since 1979, where he has been head judge of the long jump and triple jump events. He has served as Meet Referee for several college meets, including the MAC and Landmark Championships, as well as the PIAA District III Championship.

Henry has experience coaching and officiating track & field and cross country at the high school level in New Jersey and as a coaching assistant at Bloomsburg University. His experience has been primarily with the throwing events but has an interest in officiating all of the field and running events as well. He has been out of the sport for sometime due to work responsibilities, but is looking to reenter the sport as an official and help contribute to the development and education of our high school students.

Jere has been involved with Track and Field since the late 50’s / early 60’s in various capacities. He served as the Head Track and Field Coach at Cumberland Valley High School for 20+ years and Head Cross Country Coach at CV for over 30 years, in addition to 12 years of coaching at Dickinson College. Jere has served as an event official at all levels of competition (Jr.HS, HS, College, Open) and occasionally as a Starter. However, his heart lies in the field events of Shot, Discus, Javelin, and Hammer. He has also served as the Rules Interpreter for the Central Penn Chapter of T&F Officials, Head Field Judge for the Central Penn Conference Championships and District III T&F Championships.

John ran track and cross-country at Mechanicsburg HS. After a 14 year break, he began running again, and has been an avid distance runner for the past 32 years. John began his officials career in 2009 to give back something to the sport. He is the co-founder of “Gulliver’s Run,” an annual trail run that raises funds for the fight against canine cancer. John works mostly throwing events when not on the track as a starter or umpire.

After an outstanding career in the weight events at Lipscomb University in Nashville, TN, Jim coached track and cross country for two decades at Trinity High School, as well as serving nearly as long as the school’s athletic director. He has also coached track at the collegiate level at Dickinson.

After his track career at Harrisburg High School, Johnny went on to compete for Mississippi Valley as a collegian. His favorite event event was the 800 meters. Johnny has now been officiating for 40 years.

Steve is new to officialing, but not new to the sport. He has been involved with track and cross country coaching since 1986, and has served as a head cross country coach at Cumberland Valley and Lower Dauphin high schools. He remains a long distance runner, and competed for Cumberland Valley High School and Millersville University in the past. He looks forward to finding a new way of viewing his favorite pastime.

Scott is no stranger to the sport of running. He hails from the mountainous northeast part of the state where he ran both cross-country & track in high school. He went on to run cross-country for the Bloomsburg University Huskies, subsequently where he met his wife, a product of a Carlisle running family. Scott coached a junior high cross-country team for a few years in the Hazleton area and was the assistant coach to a high school team that went on to win States in the late 90’s. He continues to run today having successfully completed eleven marathons over the years, his favorite being Steamtown in his home turf. Scott resides in Middlesex Twp. with his wife of 25 years. They are the parents of a daughter, who is a sophomore Blue Hen at the University of Delaware.

Bill is a retired health and physical education teacher. His athletic experience includes HS football and Track & Field as well as college football. Bill coached football for 17 years at the HS and college level. He was a Track & Field coach for 36 years, the last 25 years as Head Track & Field coach at Mechanicsburg HS. He has served as a PIAA Track & Field official for the past 6 years and as a New York state Track & Field official. While in District 3, he started Cross Country and Track meets. He remains active as a HS meet starter and has officiated in the field at District and PIAA championships and at college invitational meets.

Karen is a graduate of Mechanicsburg Area High School where she participated for four years in Track and Field and Field Hockey. She was a state finalist in the 200 meter dash. She attended Bucknell University and was a long sprinter on the Track and Field team for four years. She moved back to this area to practice as a foot and ankle podiatric specialist in 2018. In 2022, she started officiating at the collegiate level and joined the PIAA in 2023. She enjoys officiating with her father, Bill Leonard.

Katlin is new to officiating, but not new to the sport. She participated in track and cross country during high school and was a District 3 and state medalist, and continued her running career during her studies at Penn State Harrisburg. She is looking forward to being a positive influence on the athletes she works with and getting back to the sport she loves.

Mike was a 3-sport athlete in high school and ran college track at Frostburg State. He was an assistant football and basketball coach and the head boys track coach at Gettysburg High School for 15 years. He has been an Central Penn official since 1998, primarily specializing in the pole vault. He has served as head judge at the District III meet the last eight years.

After retiring from teaching in higher education for 35 years, Sam began officiating four years ago. Sam has a background in both track and field and cross-country in high school and is now actively officiating both sports.

Larry has been a PIAA Track & Field Official since 1995. He has been involved with both Track & Field and Cross Country since the early 1980?s. He spent 21 years as an assistant cross country coach at Carlisle High School and was an assistant track coach at Dickinson College for 12 years. Larry has officiated both cross country and track & field at the Junior High, High School and College levels. He has served as an official at the District III Cross Country and Track & Field Championships. Additionally, he has officiated at the PIAA Cross Country and Track & Field Championships. Larry served as the 2014 & 2015 Meet Referee for the NCAA Division III Northeast Regional Cross Country Championships. He has worked all the track events but over the past few years Larry has served mostly as a starter. In 2015 Larry began serving as the Mid Penn Assignor for Track & Field and Cross Country.

Bill has been involved in track and field since 1970 and has been an official since 1983. Although he can be found starting duel meets in recent years, Bill is the dean of timers. A constant presence on the finish line in both high school and college meets, he is often the sole person with a stop watch at many of our largest invitational and championship meets – right up through the PIAA state championships.

Cherie has been involved with track and field for 27 years, 7 years as an athlete, 14 years as a coach and 6 years as an official. As a coach Cherie specialized in sprints, hurdles and high jump. Since becoming an official Cherie has been a starter for middle school and high school meets, clerked many large invitationals, including Shippensburg Invitational and Mid Penn Championships. She has also worked the high jump and long jump a the District III Championship and the high jump at the PIAA State Championship. Cherie also serves as the Meet Director for two high school invitationals and one middle school invitational.

Ben competed in the high jump for Mechanicsburg Area Senior High School during his junior and senior years of high school. He plans to compete collegiately after the conclusion of his gap year where he is focusing on running his sports card and memorabilia consignment business along with interning at Daybreak Church.

With two professional pole vaulters for parents, Joshua has been around track events since 2001. After competing as both a distance runner and pole vaulter during middle school in Arkansas, he fully committed to distance running for four years at Cumberland Valley High School in Pennsylvania. Introduced to officiating by his mother, Joshua looks forward to experiencing the sport from a new angle as both a PIAA and USATF official.

Pam recently moved back to Pennsylvania where she had been born into a military family. While living in Virginia, she joined her high school track team in 1979. Ever since that point she has been involved in the sport. After graduating and competing for Penn State as a horizontal jumper, hurdler, and long sprinter, she started coaching in 1987. Post collegiately Pam started pole vaulting. She became a USATF and NHSF certified official and has officiated in all track and field capacities, specializing in the vertical jumps. Pam has been involved with track and field as an athlete, coach, and official in Virginia, California, Oregon, and Arkansas. Her sons compete for Cumberland Valley Schools.

Lisa Marie was involved in track & field during her academic career, competing in cross country, discus, distance, mid-distance, shot put, and triple jump. Her passion for athletics lead her to minor in Athletic Coaching at Millersville University, affording her the opportunity to be the Head Track Coach for the Red Rose Track Club for the 1997 Spring season. After running her last cross country race in 2003, Lisa Marie took a long hiatus due to major knee complications, but made a comeback to track & field in December 2019 and competed in an indoor 300M. Lisa Marie holds multiple ASEP certifications and is also a USSF and PIAA Soccer Official. Lisa Marie is excited to officiate track & field, as her younger son looks to compete during his high school career at Chambersburg Area Senior High School.

Mark is a highly experienced track and cross country official who has specialized in weight events at both the collegiate and high school level. Mark served as the head Throws Coach at Lower Dauphin Senior High School from 2007 to 2012. While at LD, he coached several conference, District III, and State Medalists and Champions. For the past several years, Mark has become our area expert at Laser Distance Measurement (LDM), and has been using his system at multiple high school and college meets – as well as the District 3 and PIAA state championships.

Chris is a commercial insurance broker and avid runner. He is a former soccer referee and became actively involved in cross country and track when his children participated in high school and college.

I have been a PIAA soccer official for 22 years. In 2018 I began attending track meets that my son was competing in I and thought “I could enjoy officiating this just like I enjoy officiating soccer”. Then in the spring of 2019 I had the opportunity to work a college meet and I was hooked. I enjoy being part of the competition and serving the student athletes.

George coached middle school track for over 20 years with a special interest in distance and the high jump and spent another eight years developing middle school cross country runners. Much of his time coaching what he calls the “best sport on the planet” was made even more pleasurable by having his wife as a co-coach.
